Wolf RPG (ウディタ / WOLF RPG Editor) is the Japanese freeware engine behind many of the most-recommended JP indie RPGs and adult doujin games. RuneTranslate bundles UberWolfCli (MIT-licensed) as a sidecar for .wolf archive decryption and repacking, plus a heuristic length-prefixed string scanner that extracts translatable strings from .dat and .mps binary files. The translation workflow runs in a per-project workspace under your user-data folder so the original game stays pristine. V2.x is stable; V3.x is provisional — verify on real games before redistributing.
Wolf RPG games go heavy on dungeon names, boss names, and signature attacks. The heuristic string scanner finds them, but providers will rephrase them differently every batch — fine for incidental NPC dialogue, fatal for dungeon-name consistency. Glossary every named area, the protagonist + party, and any bespoke status-effect or skill name. The length-preserving writeback option means glossary-fixed names that happen to be shorter than the JP source still fit within the binary's original byte budget. Glossary 101 →
Point RuneTranslate at the game directory (containing .wolf archives or extracted .dat / .mps files). The UberWolfCli sidecar runs automatically — no separate install needed. V2.x archives are detected and decrypted; V3.x is provisional and may need manual review.
RuneTranslate scans the .dat (CommonEvent script blocks) and .mps (map data) files with a length-prefixed string scanner. It heuristically distinguishes dialogue strings from binary bytes — the kind of work that takes hours by hand for a single game.
DeepL is a strong default for Wolf RPG's mostly-narrative dialogue; OpenAI GPT-4o or Anthropic Claude are better when the game has stylized speech or onomatopoeia. Free Google Translate handles menu items and stat names.
On export, UberWolfCli repacks the modified .dat / .mps back into the .wolf archive. The length-preserving writeback option keeps binary offsets stable for engine versions where exact size matters. Translated build runs identically to the original.
